With a dedication to excellence, we offer a diverse range of classes, including Classical Ballet, Jazz Dance, Contemporary Dance, Creative Dance, and Adult Ballet. Our classes combine syllabus-based lessons with open work, providing an engaging dance education program. Students advance annually to the next level, ensuring continuous growth and skill development.
Committed to providing performance opportunities, we host two shows annually. The main production takes place mid-year to avoid the Christmas rush, while a smaller end of year showcase features student choreography, concluding the academic year on a delightful note. Additionally, we conduct annual exam sessions in Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary dance genres, monitoring students' progress and recognizing their achievements, fostering a sense of accomplishment.
Whether you're a budding professional or dancing for personal enjoyment, GCDA has a class for you.
Studying classical ballet at GCDA develops poise, confidence, coordination, and discipline. Our classes follow the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) syllabus, ensuring a high standard of classical technique.
Classes are available from Preparatory through to Advanced 2 level.
Fast, upbeat, and fun, our jazz dance classes cover various modern music styles and dance genres including classical jazz, lyrical, musical theatre and funk styles. Following the NZAMD syllabus, these classes promote musicality, strength, flexibility, and quick learning abilities.
Offering an extension to ballet and jazz dance technique, our contemporary dance classes focus on alignment, gravity, contraction, release, and suspension. Aligned with the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD) syllabus, these classes enhance expressiveness and dynamics. Students must be enrolled in either ballet or jazz classes to qualify for training in contemporary at GCDA.
PRESCHOOL CREATIVE DANCE
Our preschool program, Smart Moves Creative Dance, caters to 3 and 4-year-olds. Weekly sessions focus on diverse locomotor and non-locomotor skills, emphasizing concepts such as size, direction, speed, and shapes. Unlike a steps-only approach, this program prioritises exploration, creating an enjoyable and engaging learning experience. Classes feature fun props and a variety of music styles, providing a playful, positive, and non-competitive environment that delights both boys and girls.
Discover the joy of ballet as an adult with our tailored classes. Whether you're returning to dance or starting as a beginner, our Adult Ballet classes offer different levels, including Level 1 for those reconnecting with childhood dance experiences, or Level 2 for a more advanced understanding. Pointe work is available at Level 2 (at the teacher’s discretion). Ballet provides an enjoyable way to keep fit whilst creating social bonds for adults as well as children.
